Grants: 4 / My Results: 4

Do you have an idea for changing the world — or at least your corner of it?

For more than 25 years, the United Way has been providing small grants — up to $2,500 — to help ordinary people accomplish extraordinary things to help their neighborhoods and their community.

Since 1995, United Way has provided grant money for 825 different projects that help to build stronger connections between people and that fill an important need — from starting a neighborhood cleanup program to establishing a community garden to providing hygiene items for the region’s unsheltered people.

You don’t have to be part of an established non-profit organization to apply for a Changemaker Grant (formerly the Community Building Mini-Grants Program). These grants go to all-volunteer groups with annual budgets of less than $40,000 that have one thing in common: they have great ideas for building and helping their community. So if you are a member of a neighborhood association, a group of concerned parents, or a small group looking to do big things for your community, we urge you to contact us and apply.

Evidence shows that families with dependable, affordable, high-quality care for their children are more successful professionally. By extension, their potential for economic mobility improves. To facilitate breakthroughs in the well-being of preschool-age children and their families, United Way of Greater New Bedford (UWGNB) has announced the Innovation Challenge. Nonprofits, for-profits, or public entities (e.g., schools, hospitals, government, etc.) with projects that experiment, pilot, or test new, transformative ideas and approaches for early education and care can apply for the grant. Applicants may apply for up to three years of unrestricted funding, with one year of funding guaranteed and funding in years two and three dependent on achieving project milestones. Individual projects can apply for up to $100,000, and collaborative projects can apply for up to $175,000. UWGNB will look for projects that address long-lasting, system-wide changes such as reimagining the design of a program or service or building capacity within an organization or across the sector.
